Civil engineering divisions of the Department of Sri Lanka Railways completed critical permanent-way track upgrades on the highland Main Line between Demodara and Badulla today, September 25, 2026.

The technical overhaul involved clearing hillside stormwater runoff ditches, securing stone retaining walls along the Demodara loop viaducts, and packing 1,500 metric tons of fresh granite ballast to prevent rail bed subsidence caused by relentless upland rainfall. Railway operating chiefs affirmed that the track stabilization guarantees smooth, safe operations for the daily 'Ella Odyssey' and intercity passenger expresses, maintaining vital connectivity for hill country commuters and international tourists.
