The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation initiated site preparation work for Phase I of the Talaimannar North Pier Redevelopment Project in northern Mannar District. The engineering blueprint includes constructing a 310 meter long, 7 meter wide reinforced concrete pier equipped with night navigation lighting, modern customs immigration bays, and expanded passenger terminal amenities. The infrastructure aims to support commercial ferry services linking Talaimannar directly to Rameswaram, India. Trade delegates noted that restoring the short haul maritime corridor will boost regional tourism, facilitate low cost cargo movement, and revive economic commerce between Southern India and Sri Lanka's Northern Province.
