Uva Wellassa University in Badulla, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, has introduced a suite of professional hotel management and eco-tourism training programs aimed at expanding the skilled hospitality workforce across Uva Province. The practical certificate and diploma courses cover front-office management, culinary arts, eco-tour guiding, and sustainable hotel operations, specifically targeting school leavers and young adults from rural communities in Badulla and Monaragala districts. With rapid tourism growth in Ella, Haputale, and Bandarawela driving strong demand for trained hotel personnel, regional resort owners have frequently struggled to recruit local staff possessing recognized hospitality qualifications. Course modules include hands-on training at partnering luxury boutique hotels across Badulla District, combined with intensive English and foreign language instruction tailored for international guest relations. University administrators confirmed that the first cohort of 250 trainees will graduate in December 2026, with over 80% already securing conditional employment offers from regional hotel operators.
