Uva Wellassa University (UWU) in Badulla announced today, September 25, 2026, that it has secured formal Cabinet endorsement to commence a comprehensive five-year ecological research project investigating tropical rainforest and montane biodiversity across the central highlands.

Conducted in collaboration with international botanical research institutions, the study focuses on documenting vulnerable endemic flora, forest canopy moisture retention, and micro-climate fluctuations across protected nature corridors in the Uva basin. University Vice-Chancellor and faculty researchers noted that advanced genomic analysis and automated camera-trap networks will be deployed to inform national climate adaptation models and preserve fragile upland cloud forest habitats.
