The Department of Wildlife Conservation, in partnership with local environmental NGOs, launched an expanded conservation and eco-tourism framework for the Vankalai Sanctuary in Mannar District. As a designated Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, Vankalai's shallow lagoons and mudflats provide vital wintering habitats for tens of thousands of migratory waterfowl, including greater flamingos and spot-billed pelicans. The initiative establishes designated bird-watching towers, guided boardwalk trails, and community ranger patrols. Wildife officers confirmed that community-led conservation guidelines will safeguard wetland hydrology, mitigate plastic pollution, and generate sustainable eco-tourism income for surrounding village households.
