Agricultural scientists at the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka released field trial findings from their Makandura research premises in Kurunegala today, September 22, 2026.

The study evaluated low-cost digital soil moisture profilers and microclimate sensor arrays installed across commercial coconut plantations and intercropped spice plots within the intermediate zone. Research leads reported that real-time moisture telemetry enables plantation managers to reduce water waste by 25% while safeguarding palm root health during transitional monsoon dry spells, presenting a viable model for climate-smart perennial crop management.
